Abstract

Curious about 3D printing but not sure where to begin? This short talk gets you up to speed with this fun and creative hobby. We briefly revisit the history of modern consumer-grade Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers and how they became accessible to hobbyists and enthusiasts. We also demonstrate how FDM printers work, explore different printer styles, and discuss the variety of materials you can use. Finally, we discuss practical advice on getting started, including choosing the right machine for your job, finding resources such as guides and printable files, and basics of creating your own designs for 3D printing.
