Inderjit Dhillon named IEEE fellow

Inderjit Dhillon, an ICES core faculty member and professor of computer science, has been named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It is the IEEE’s most prestigious honor, with less than 0.1 percent of voting members being annually elevated to fellow status.

The IEEE Board of Directors cited Dhillon’s contributions to large-scale data analysis and computational mathematics as reasons for his elevation.

Dhillon is affiliated with the Division of Statistics and Scientific Computation, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. His research at ICES includes large-scale data mining, machine learning, network analysis, numerical optimization and scientific computing. A recent research project of Dhillon's involves creating a Facebook-like network for identifying connections between genes and diseases.

Dhillon is the recipient of the 2013 ICES Distinguished Research Award and a senior member of the Association for Computing Machinery, SIAM and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
