ICES Director Tinsley Oden penned a brief remembrance of his friend and colleague Peter Flawn, and will expand on his thoughts at the memorial ceremony.
Services honoring the former UT president and ICES board member will be held Saturday, May 13, at 11 a.m. in the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium, LBJ Presidential Library. Oden will speak as part of the ceremony.
"We at ICES and I personally, are forever thankful that we knew Peter, as a member of our Board of Visitors for over a decade, and as a dear, thoughtful, and loyal friend," Oden said. "All of us know that our lives are better because of Peter Flawn, because ICES and The University are what they are due to his vision and guidance, and because of the example he set for all of us to try to follow."
"He was a man of great intellect, compassion, and integrity. He is remembered for his sense of humor and his no-nonsense management style.
"He strongly supported interdisciplinary research and academic study and he enthusiastically endorsed the special mission and organizational structure on which ICES was built. His counsel was an important factor in the success of the Institute."
His influence across The University was great.
