Geometric structures serve as an essential building blocks in a variety of natural systems and influence phenomena in fluid
dynamics and plasma physics in particular. The complexity of fluid flows and electromagnetic fields has driven the development of
computational simulation algorithms for decades. In this talk, I will discuss approaches for the development of novel simulation methods
based on geometric structures, which reduce complex physical simulations to problems of geometry optimization. Using concrete
examples, I will show how these innovative strategies not only refine practical simulations, but also pave the way for new theoretical
insights.
Oliver Gross is a doctoral student in mathematics at Technische Universität Berlin under the supervision of Prof. Ulrich Pinkall. He
is interested in the application of differential geometry for numerical methods for problems emerging in computer graphics and
physics simulation. His current research projects are on the geometry of plasma physics and Newtonian mechanics on Riemannian manifolds.
