Afzal is interested in fluid dynamics and numerical methods along with their applications to investigate and solve fluid-flow problems in Earth and Planetary Sciences. He holds a bachelor's and master's in mechanical engineering from different parts of Asia and has over nine years of academic and industrial research experience.
Before joining the program, he was a Visiting Graduate Researcher at MIT Fluids lab. At the Geological Fluid Mechanics Group led by Dr. Marc Hesse, he has been working on deriving the mathematical and computational models for addressing problems involving the subsurface flow of water on Earth and other planets, to search for extraterrestrial life and combatting climate change, in collaboration with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
