Biography

Prof. van de Geijn received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park, and his B.S. in mathematics and computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He leads the Science of High-Performance Computing (SHPC) group and is a core member of the Oden Institute.

Prof. van de Geijn is a leading expert in linear algebra, high-performance computing, parallel computing, scientific computing, numerical analysis, software architecture of linear algebra libraries, and formal derivation of algorithms.

Linear algebra is often at the "bottom of the food chain" in computational and data science. The question is how to carefully develop and deploy software libraries that support linear algebra functionality. The SHPC group develops techniques that allow families of algorithms to be systematically derived. From these families, variants with desirable properties (e.g., high performance) can be chosen. The resulting open source software libraries have been widely adopted by academia and industry.
