Biography

Hairong Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Operations Research & Industrial Engineering program at The University of Texas at Austin. She received her Ph.D. in Operations Research from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. Prior to Georgia Tech, she received her B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Oxford. She currently serves as a Council Member of the INFORMS Data Mining Society and as a Board Member of the IISE Data Analytics & Information Systems Division. She has received the Wally George Fellowship for excellence in health systems research, and the David Cowan Scholarship for outstanding achievement in health information technology and informatics.

Hairong Wang's research focuses on developing knowledge-informed, data-efficient machine learning models and algorithms, and on pursuing their practical applications in addressing pressing, high-stakes clinical challenges. Specifically, her work develops and leverages tools from machine learning (ML), generative artificial intelligence (AI), large-scale optimization, and high-dimensional statistics to: (1) develop data-driven methodologies for building and training machine learning models with data and computational efficiency, interpretability, generalizability, and robustness; (2) propose principled approaches to fuse domain knowledge into model design for assisting clinical diagnosis/optimal treatment in high-stake scenarios.
