Yannis Voet is a Peter O'Donnell Jr. Postdoctoral Fellow working with Prof. Gunnar Martinsson's research group in numerical analysis and computational mathematics. Pivoting from an engineering major, Yannis completed his Ph.D. in computational mathematics at EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, where he was supervised by Prof. Annalisa Buffa and Dr. Espen Sande.
His Ph.D. focused on devising numerical methods for approximating the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) in structural dynamics. In particular, he thoroughly analyzed the “mass lumping” process, an approximation of the finite element “mass matrix”, commonly used in engineering practice.
With interests ranging far beyond numerical PDEs, Yannis also tackled various linear algebra problems he stumbled upon, such as preconditioning, multiterm matrix equations, and Kronecker factorizations.
In 2024, Yannis was a recipient of the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching from EPFL.
