Ivo Babuška (1926 - 2023)

Portrait of Ivo Babuška

Ivo Babuška was a world-renowned mathematician whose foundational work in the finite element method shaped modern computational engineering. He spent the final decades of his career at UT Austin within the Oden Institute community, mentoring researchers and students while advancing numerical analysis and finite element theory. Together with his wife Renata Babuška (1930 - 2020), he established two gifts to support the next generation of scientists and engineers. The Ivo and Renata Babuška Scholarship is given to an undergraduate at UT Austin each year.  Their gift also supports the student-led Babuška Forum, a seminar series Babuška founded to expose students to extraordinary lectures by the best computational scientists, mathematicians, and engineers in the world.
