J. Tinsley Oden Faculty Fellowship Research (Visitors) Program

The J. Tinsley Oden Faculty Fellowship Research Program was established in 1993 by an anonymous endowment donated to enhance the Oden Institute research environment. In March 2003, the program was renamed in honor of Professor J. Tinsley Oden.

The program's purpose is twofold:

  • First and foremost, to provide the facilities, financial support and technical support to bring in outstanding researchers and scholars to the University of Texas to collaborate with Oden Institute faculty, researchers and students on advanced research in computational engineering, mathematics and sciences.
  • Second, to bring internationally renowned scholars to present lectures on new developments in order to disseminate cutting-edge information to Institute faculty, research staff and students.

Since its inception, the program has sponsored over 574 unique visitors from the US and abroad for over 1,000 visits ranging in length from two weeks to one year. To date, the program has sponsored over 400 international visits, with fellows representing 34 countries and every major continent.

Opportunities for applications to sponsor Faculty Fellows are announced to Core Faculty multiple times throughout each year. For more information, please contact Kelly Tagle.

Application Guidelines

  • This fund is to be used to support senior visiting scholars. Students, postdoctoral or permanent employees are not eligible.
  • All visiting fellows must be sponsored by an Oden Institute faculty member. The sponsor is responsible for submitting a completed application for his/her candidate and for communicating with the Program Coordinator concerning special arrangements such as visas, lodging, etc. The sponsor is also expected to function as a host of the visitor.
  • Length of visit to the Oden Institute must be from a minimum of two weeks to a maximum of one year.
  • Priority is given to visitors who interact with sponsors who are active in the Oden Institute research activities.
  • The Oden Institute must comply with the UT travel policies concerning maximum expense allowances for state or local funds. If a faculty sponsor arranges hotel accommodation for a visitor and exceeds the required limits, it will be the responsibility of the sponsor to cover the exceeded amount.
  • Due to increased immigration requirements, Kelly Tagle must be notified of visa requests at least three months before the visitor’s arrival date. Any delay could significantly affect the visitor’s arrival date and/or payments.
  • At the conclusion of the visit, visiting fellows are required to submit a one-page summary of research conducted during the visit.

Please note that all persons affiliated with the University are currently required by law or UT policy to take certain compliance training within the first 21 days of university affiliation. Please familiarize yourself with University policy visiting researchers and scholars.
